The purpose of this department is to provide routine maintenance to the various buildings of Sullivan County general government and to provide safe and sanitary facilities for county employees from which to serve the public.
Primary Responsibilities
The goal of the Maintenance Department is to provide quality, cost-effective, and timely custodial and maintenance repair services for the Sullivan County Courthouse Complex in Blountville, the Sullivan County Office Building, the Blountville and Bristol Justice Centers, and the Health Department in Kingsport. It also provides vehicle maintenance for miscellaneous smaller department fleets of vehicles including EMS ambulances. Responsibilities for the school facilities, highways and the jail are assigned to the respective departments.
The cleaning service is provided by full-time and part-time county employees for all private offices with assistance from the "Day Worker Program" overseen by the Construction Oversight Manager in coordination with the General Sessions Courts and the Sheriff’s Office. The "Day Worker Program" routinely provides a work detail supervised by an employee of the maintenance department, while other details are supervised with part-time workers to conduct the cleaning of public areas and grounds maintenance. The day worker program has expanded the services of the County Maintenance Department without increasing full-time employees, while reducing inmates in the county jail.
